Pre-foundation 1685-1800. Downing College was founded by Sir George Downing, 3rd Baronet. Much of the family's wealth was generated in the 17th century through the governmental career of his grandfather Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet, who served Cromwell and Charles II as well as building 10 Downing Street, the London home of the Prime Minister.

Downing College provides just over 400 rooms for undergraduates and accommodation for over 190 postgraduates, including rooms and some flats. We have seven rooms which have been adapted for students with disabilities; five rooms are suitable for wheelchair users, and two rooms have facilities for students with hearing impairments.
