Born in Secunderabad in 1931, Ashokamitran spent the first 20 years of his life there. His real name was Jagadisa Thyagarajan. He moved to Chennai in 1952 after the death of his father, following an invitation from his father's friend, the film director S.S.Vasan to come work at Vasan's Gemini Studios.
He later adopted the character’s name 'Ashokamitran’ as his pen name. The radio play Anbin Parisu (Love’s Gift) published in 1954 was his first work. It was influenced by Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters In Search Of The Author. Tamil writer Nakulan followed Ashokamitran’s writings attentively and promoted his aesthetic outlook.
Ashokitram said that Subbu was the No. 2 of the very big Gemini Studios in Chennai (was known as Madras), South India for over 30 years and was a close friend of S. S. Vasan, who established those studios and gave out to the public the popular Tamil weekly magazine Ananda Vikatan.

The humour is at its peak in the description of the visit of Stephen Spender. S.S. Vasan’s reading a long speech in his honour but he too knew precious little about him. Spender’s accent is highly unintelligible. Then the author’s establishing long lost brother’s relationship with the English visitor is also funny and humorous.
