May 2, 2024 · It’s like he’s seen a ghost. They exchange a silent glance — the first of many — as Ray’s tightly wound, elegantly written, and masterfully staged domestic drama uncoils. Kapurush is perhaps his most underrated movie, one that Ray himself considered deserving of a far better reception than the one it received.
Kapurush, especially, is enormously rewarding even though it may feel thinly-plotted to many. In fact, this is one of the most suspenseful films Ray ever made, and falls rather close in style and treatment to Film Noir.
Kapurush (The Coward) Amitabha Roy (Soumitra Chatterjee) is a Calcutta based scriptwriter who is driving around in the country to collect material for a film. His vehicle breaks down in a small town. A tea planter, Bimal Gupta, offers hospitality for the night.
In Kapurush, a young screenwriter (Soumitra Chatterjee) has to lay over on a tea plantation in Hashimara when his car breaks down. Little does he realize, he and the wife of his host (Madhabi Mukherjee) have a personal history together and a noirish whirlpool of agonizing flashbacks is unleashed.
