Aug 12, 2020 · In 1808, Madison County was created by the governor of the Mississippi territory who named it after President James Madison (1751-1836). To raise money for its development, the U.S. government almost immediately ordered land sales in the northern part of Alabama Territory.

Madison County is home to Alabama's largest city, Huntsville, and is the heart of the state's aerospace industry and home to the Marshall Space Flight Center. Named for James Madison, who was U.S. Secretary of State at the time, it was created in 1808, some 11 years before Alabama gained statehood.
