It's possible that "stay in touch" is a little more insistant and sincere than saying "keep in touch", which is kind of a casual and reflexive remark (like saying "see you later" when you have no idea when or if you'll ever see that person again).

I am wondering whether it simply means that there is a spring on the ashtray and you can touch it, or that this expression has some idiomatic meanings. The literal meaning sounds odd to me.   8. Jun 21, 2010 · I'll be in touch is a promise to keep in contact. You can never tell whether it will or will not happen. My experience is that contact is quickly lost, unless there was something special between the 2 people. Sad but true. Whether you try to keep in contact is your decision.. It is not ours.

There is a slight difference in meaning. In the first example, it could just be a friendly intention to call and say hi now and again!
