In cell A2 put the character for up-arrow (you'll find it by Insert Symbol & then looking up the symbol) In cell A3 put the character for down-arrow (you'll find it by Insert Symbol & then looking up the symbol)

Here’s how you use it. 1. Select Insert, Shapes dropdown and choose an arrow. 2. Click in the origin cell and drag to the final cell.
May 27, 2002 · New Member. I would like to insert up and down arrow symbols into Excel columns to express the direction of changes. I have found that =CHAR (24) will produce the up arrow. However, =CHAR (25) produces a symbol different from the down arrow. I tried all combinations from =CHAR (1) to =CHAR (255), but none produce the down arrow symbol.

Somewhere outside the pivot table, add columns to show increases or decreases. In the figure below, the difference between I6 and H6 is 3, but you just want to record this as a positive change. Use SIGN(I6-H6) to get either +1, 0, or -1.
