The company was formed in 1921 from a merger of two rival sugar refiners: Henry Tate & Sons and Abram Lyle & Sons. Our History. 1878. Henry Tate's new Thames Refinery in London's East End begins operations specialising in cube sugar. 1878. 1882. Abram Lyle's new London refinery, Plaistow Wharf, begins refining sugar and producing Lyle's Golden Syrup. 1882. 1897. Henry Tate endows the Tate Gallery, now Tate Britain.
