She is the recipient of a Tony Award (1993) , 2 Drama Desk Awards (1988, 2007), the Helen Hayes Award (1994), the Obie Award (2000) and an Emmy Award (1999) for her work.
A former waitress and rockabilly singer in her salad days, she co-wrote and starred in the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, based on her earlier experiences. It started off-off Broadway and ended up winning a Tony nomination for Best Musical in 1982.
