Back in 1844, there were no proper medical facilities for the common people. Mr Tan Tock Seng out of compassion and care gave the first donation that made this hospital possible. Today, more than 175 years later, TTSH is a modern hospital.

In March 2003 when Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) struck in Singapore, Tan Tock Seng Hospital was designated as the screening and treatment centre for SARS. Today, the hospital continues to research on emerging infectious diseases and find the best treatment for them.
Tan Tock Seng, a Malacca-born merchant and influential Chinese community leader and philanthropist founded the hospital on 25 July 1844. This Hospital played a significant role in the treatment of tuberculosis after WWII.
