By choosing to use three violas and cello, Niehaus gives the strings a richness that complements his alto, and he achieves particularly striking colors when two more saxophones are added to the ensemble. Four tracks with a more familiar quintet instrumentation leaven the string numbers.

Jan 31, 2007 · On a handful of tracks the strings lay out, and these are the best selections on the disc, especially MY HEART STOOD STILL and JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS. With the strings the best track is FULL HOUSE, a Niehaus original, with excellent Bill Perkins on tenor and Bob Gordon on baritone sax. Still a decent CD, but it could have been even better.
