The Middle Temple is the western part of "The Temple", which was the headquarters of the Knights Templar until they were dissolved in 1312. There have been lawyers in the Temple since 1320, when they were the tenants of the Earl of Lancaster, who had held the Temple since 1315. [4]
A modern institution with a long and distinguished history, Middle Temple is a place of many parts. First and foremost, Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court which have the exclusive right to Call students to the Bar.
A member of Inner Temple, Gray’s Inn or Lincoln’s Inn who has practiced at the Bar of England and Wales can, with good reason, apply to join the Middle Temple as an Ad Eundem member. Jan 31, 2018 · Known as the Temple, this little corner of the capital is named for the medieval order of soldier monks, the Knights Templar, who from 1160-ish had their London Headquarters on this very spot, after they outgrew their previous accommodation in Holborn. So this was where they worked, ate, slept, trained, played – and prayed.
Middle Temple falls appropriately in the middle of the largest inn, Lincoln’s Inn, and the smallest inn, Gray’s Inn, in terms of its size. It has approximately 5,000 practising barristers on its books, with roughly 600 student members admitted each year.
