Torakusu Yamaha (山葉 寅楠, Yamaha Torakusu, 20 April 1851 – 8 August 1916) was a Japanese businessman and entrepreneur known as the founder of the Yamaha Corporation.

History. Torakusu Yamaha, founder of Yamaha Corporation. Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. (日本楽器製造株式会社, Nihon Gakki Seizō Kabushiki gaisha, lit. 'Japan Musical Instrument Manufacture') was established in 1887 as a reed organ manufacturer by Torakusu Yamaha (山葉寅楠) in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture and was incorporated on 12 October 1897.
In 1900, a small company started by Torakusu Yamaha built Japan’s first upright piano. Just two years later, they would create the country’s first grand piano, which would go on to receive an Honorary Grand Prize at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
