The academy was founded by John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, in 1822 with the help and ideas of the French harpist and composer Nicolas Bochsa.[5] The academy was granted a royal charterby King George IVin 1830.[4] The founding of the academy was greatly supported by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.
