Alcan was a Canadian mining company and aluminum manufacturer. It was founded in 1902 as the Northern Aluminum Company, renamed Aluminum Company of Canada in 1925, and Alcan Aluminum in 1966. It took the name Alcan Incorporated in 2001.
It began as a join-venture company of NIPPON LIGHT METAL CO., LTD. (NLM), the only fully integrated aluminium company in Japan, and ALUMINIUM COMPANY OF MALAYSIA BERHAD (ALCOM), the biggest aluminium company in Malaysia.
It was created on 15 November 2007 as the result of the merger between Rio Tinto's Canadian subsidiary and Canadian company Alcan . The company is the global leader of aluminium mining and production, above its one time parent Alcoa (from which it split in 1928), Rusal, and some Chinese public companies.

Jul 19, 2024 · Alcan Aluminium Limited, Canadian multinational company that was incorporated in 1928 (as Aluminium Limited) and, after multiple name changes, was acquired by the mining company Rio Tinto in 2007. Alcan continues to be used in Canada as a brand name for consumer goods.
