Marine Midland Bank was an American bank formerly headquartered in Buffalo, New York, with several hundred branches throughout the state of New York. In 1998, branches extended to Pennsylvania. It was acquired by HSBC in 1980, and changed its name to HSBC Bank USA in 1999.
Marine Midland Corporation (now HSBC USA Inc.) was formed on 4 October 1929 in New York, USA. It was the first multi-bank holding company in the state. Its origins can be traced back to the Marine Bank of Buffalo (later Marine Trust Company of Buffalo), which was founded in 1850.
The Marine Trust Company of Western New York (later called Marine Midland Bank - Western) was formed in 1951 through the merger of The Marine Trust Company of Buffalo with a number of other regional banks. It merged into Marine Midland Bank in 1976.
The banks continued to operate under the Marine Midland name until 1998, when the offices were re-branded as HSBC Bank. In 1994, Marine Midland acquired Spectrum Home Mortgage, which operated in eight states. In 1995, Marine Midland acquired United Northern Federal Savings Bank, with branches in Watertown and Lowville, New York.
The Marine Bank of Buffalo was founded in 1850 in Buffalo, New York, USA. It became the Marine Trust Company of Buffalo in 1919. A new holding company, the Marine Midland Corporation, grew out of the business in 1929. The Marine Trust Company continued to serve as a local bank, as part of the Corporation’s large network of affiliated subsidiaries.
