The film was planned as a sequel to the 1940 Universal film Hired Wife, which starred Russell and Brian Aherne (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1931-40; F3.1922), and was originally scheduled to begin shooting on November 28, 1941.

Fired Wife is a cute but forgettable story about a couple who gets married before they really finalize their career plans with each other, which ends in a trip to Reno. Tig (Louise Albritton) is a beautiful theater assistant who gets the chance to direct her first show, but she absolutely cannot be married to do the job (even though she is).
