In his first straight acting performance, old rocker Tommy Steele stars as Jack Sheppard, the notorious highwayman and jail-breaker who became a folk hero in 1720s London. Jack is working as an apprentice to a clockmaker when his brother Tom is sentenced to be hanged for theft.
When Lady Darlington, formerly a willing victim of Jack's escapades, sends him an invitation to dinner, Jack miraculously breaks out of jail again, to the delight of London citizens who have by now elevated him to legendary status.
