Biography. Austrian botanist (Dutch-born) who collected plants in the West Indies for the imperial gardens of Schönbrunn. He spent the latter part of his life as a professor in Vienna. Born in Leiden to parents of French Catholic origin, Jacquin's cloth merchant father sent him to a Jesuit college in Antwerp.

The recipient of the letter, Emilian Gottfried von Jacquin (1767-1792), was the son of Nikolaus Joseph, Baron [Freiherr] von Jacquin (1728-1817), a notable botanist. Gottfried’s daughter Franziska was one of Mozart's keyboard pupils, while he himself composed.
