Geneva Medical College was founded on September 15, 1834, in Geneva, New York, as a separate department (college) of Geneva College, currently known as Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In 1871, the medical school was transferred to Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York .

The first proposal to establish a medical department at Geneva College under Dr. Thomas Spencer and Dr. John Morgan, 1834. The Geneva branch of the Rutgers Medical Faculty of Geneva College was deeply dependent on Dr. Hosack.
This created a monopoly on medical education in New York State and caused the first ripple that eventually led to the creation of Geneva Medical College. A group of medical practitioners feared this lack of competition would lead to inflated tuition and an overall weakening of the medical education system, so they started their own medical college.
During the 1860s, the Geneva Medical College struggled to fill its classes and its coffers were dwindling, mainly because it lacked a teaching hospital.
