For Microsoft Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. Windows XP. Quit all Office programs. Click Start, and then click Search.
If it's all of the old documents, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > File Block Settings. If there are check marks in the rows for "Word 2003 Binary Documents and Templates" and/or "Word 2007 Binary Documents and Templates", clear those boxes, restart Word, and try opening the documents.
Apr 27, 2019 · I just tested in converting an old 1997-2003 Word document on my side and didn't encounter any issue. Here is the steps I performed: 1.Go to File > Info > under Compatibility Mode, click on Convert. 2.Save this document is .docx format. Converting documents to a newer format.

The Compatibility Checker lists elements in your document that aren't supported or will behave differently in Word 2007 or in the Word 97-2003 format. Some of these features will be permanently changed and won't be converted to Microsoft Word 2010 elements even if you later convert the document to Word 2010 format.
For example, you can save your document (.docx) as a Word 97-2003 document (.doc) so someone using an earlier version of Word can open it.
