Jan 1, 2024 · Rice husk (RH) (Fig. 1-A) is one of the primary agricultural wastes produced in rice-cultivating countries. Despite its numerous applications, its economic benefits and contributions have not been sufficiently highlighted ( Prabhakaran et al, 2017 ; Bodie et al, 2019 ).
Rice husk is a hydrophilic agricultural by-product obtained when the protective shell is removed from the rice grain. Its siliceous composition resists natural degradation, and its disposal can constitute a significant environmental load if no value-added use is found for it.
The rice husk, also called rice hull, is the coating on a seed or grain of rice. It is formed from hard materials, including silica and lignin, to protect the seed during the growing season. Each kg of milled white rice results in roughly 0.28 kg of rice husk as a by-product of rice production during milling.
