He is the first son and second child of the current Pemangku Sultan (Regent) and Tunku Mahkota (Crown Prince) of Johor, Major General Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim and his consort, Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor.
On the demise of his father, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail was proclaimed the Sultan of Johor on 23 January 2010. His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim is married to Her Royal Highness Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah. They are blessed with six children, five boys and a girl.

Tunku Ibrahim was born on 22 November 1958 at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, during the reign of his great-grandfather, Sultan Ibrahim of Johor. He was the third child and eldest son of Sultan Iskandar by his first wife, Josephine Ruby Trevorrow, an English woman from Torquay.
