The Red Fort or Lal Qila ( Hindustani: [laːl qiːlaː]) is a historic fort in Delhi, India, that historically served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort on 12 May 1639, when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi.

The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad – the new capital of the fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shah Jahan. Named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone, it is adjacent to an older fort, the Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546, with which it forms the Red Fort Complex.
Red Fort and Salimgarh fort make for the core zone while the immediate surroundings of Lal Qila and Salimgarh fort measuring around 40 hectares are the buffer zone. Salimgarh fort was built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546 AD and was an important focal point of Shahjahanabad.
