The Malaysian Constitution defines the Malays as “people who speak the Malay language as their mother tongue, lead the Malay way of life and profess the Islamic faith (Asmah, 1983, p. 79). The Constitution also recognizes Malay as the official language and, Islam, as the official religion of the Malay-dominated Malaysian nation-state.
