Shuri (首里, Okinawan: スイ Sui or Shui, Northern Ryukyuan: しより Shiyori [1]) is a district of the city of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Formerly a separate city in and of itself, it was once the royal capital of the Ryūkyū Kingdom.
Shuri was the capital of Okinawa until the 1870s. It is now part of Naha, the new capital. Shuri Castle is one of five castles designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The striking red "brick" roof tiles are a hallmark of Okinawa, and very different from castles elsewhere in Japan.
