Encompassing styles as diverse as folk, disco, and rock, kayokyoku defined the sound of pop in postwar Japan, but its roots actually stretch back to the late ’20s and early ’30s, when the first kayokyoku artists began to combine traditional Japanese music with the swinging rhythms of American jazz.
Enka (演歌) is a Japanese music genre considered to resemble traditional Japanese music stylistically. Modern enka, however, is a relatively recent musical form, which adopts a more traditional musical style in its vocalism than ryūkōka music, popular during the prewar years. [ 1 ]
