Born in 1895, Malik Ghulam Muhammad belonged to a middle-class family from Mochi Gate, Lahore. His childhood was spent in the walled city of Lahore and thus the impact of pure Lahori culture was very much visible on his personality.
Following the Partition of India in 1947, Malik Ghulam Muhammad left the company and emigrated to Pakistan, where he became the first finance minister of the new state (and later the third Governor General in 1951).
