Winchester College is an independent boarding school for boys in the British public school tradition, situated in Winchester, Hampshire. It has existed in its present location for over 600 years. It is the oldest of the original seven public schools defined by the Clarendon Commission and regulated by the Public Schools Act 1868.
However, Winchester College will open the school to girls for the first time after discussing the issue for more than 100 years. From 2022 it will admit girls into the sixth form as day students; girls will also be able to join as boarders by 2024. Located in Hampshire, Winchester College currently educates around 700 students.
Boarding is perhaps an inaccurate term for the personal atmosphere at Winchester. Every House here is its own family. It is extensive in number (a Winchester house has about sixty pupils), and diverse in its influences (Wykehamists come from many countries and their parents from many walks of life).
Winchester College was founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor to Richard II. The first seventy students entered the school in 1394. Winchester College is a boarding school for boys in Years 9 – 13. The Sixth Form welcomes girls and boys as day pupils and is preparing for the entry of girls as boarders when construction of two new boarding houses is complete. It was founded by William of Wykeham in 1382 and is one of the world’s most famous and distinguished schools.
