Communication Studies seeks to understand communication and to improve its practice in a variety of relationships. We focus on two person and family communication, communication in small groups and in large organizations, communication across communities, the nature of language and symbols, and the nature of argument and persuasion in political settings and in social movements.

Students following the 2018-2020 or 2020-2022 catalog must satisfy a language and culture requirement in one of the following ways: (a) Demonstrating intermediate proficiency in a single language other than English; (b) Taking two consecutive courses in one language and one approved culture course in a culture that is relevant to the language.
The Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies degree comprises 120 credit hours. Core Curriculum. A specific combination of coursework in English, Government, American History, Math, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Fine Arts. Major requirements. Minimum of 36 and maximum of 48 hours of major-specific coursework in the department.
