The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for the “fight or flight” response during any potential danger. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system inhibits the body from overworking and restores the body to a calm and composed state.

The sympathetic system is associated with the fight-or-flight response, and parasympathetic activity is referred to by the epithet of rest and digest. Homeostasis is the balance between the two systems. At each target effector, dual innervation determines activity.
The majority of ganglia of the sympathetic system belong to a network of sympathetic chain (or trunk) ganglia that runs lateral to the vertebral column and anterior to the paired spinal nerves (Figure 14.2.1 14.2. 1 ). For this reason, these ganglia can also be called paravertebral ganglia.
