鄭中基出生於 香港 [2] ，是 金牌大風 唱片公司總裁 鄭東漢 （前 寶麗金 亞洲太平洋區總裁、環球唱片亞洲太平洋區總裁、百代唱片亞洲區主席、正東唱片和金牌娛樂創辦人）的兒子。 1989年畢業於 聖類斯中學 中五年級 [3] ，後赴 美國 Mt. San Antonio College （英语：Mt. San Antonio College） 進修，主修商業、副修音樂史。 鄭中基雖然长相一般，但嗓音非常好。 他自小喜歡唱歌，加上其獨特的身分，因而常常有機會來到寶麗金辦公室和錄音室“偷師”，也因此跟 寶麗金 多個著名 音樂製作人 ，例如 周啟生 、 向雪懷 、葉廣權、黃祖輝相熟，當中葉廣權最先推薦他和唱 李克勤 的《 紅日 》，其後再擔任 譚詠麟 的《 你是我的女人 》的和聲。
