Karlheinz Stockhausen, (born Aug. 22, 1928, Mödrath, near Cologne, Ger.—died Dec. 5, 2007, Kürten), German composer.Orphaned during World War II, he supported himself with odd jobs (including jazz pianist) before entering Cologne’s State Academy for Music in 1947.
