May 15, 2015 · Lookswise, the film is pure gorgeousness. Trouble is, it is also largely overwrought and inert. The meticulous detailing in the re-creation of one of the most pulsating periods of Bombay’s history, is terrific. Much of the film stays, mostly and disappointingly, on its sepia surface.

May 14, 2015 · Last week, when I interviewed the team of Bombay Velvet, Karan Johar described director Anurag Kashyap as 'a mess, a glorious mess'. He could've been talking about the film. Bombay Velvet, which starts out in 1949 and ends in the 1960s, is admirably ambitious. Parts of it are glorious, but it's also undeniably a mess.

TASK #2: A film edited by Thelma Schoonmaker! Its plot is underwhelming and the pacing is often awkward and slow, but the ambition on display alone, from its stunning visuals and art direction to its terrific cast to its utterly meticulous and even frightening attention to detail, is enough to make Bombay Velvet a period crime drama worth watching.
