Joseph Aleksandrovich Brodsky -- whose first name is sometimes given as Josip or Iosif -- was born in Leningrad on May 24, 1940, to Joseph Aleksandrovich Brodsky, a commercial photographer, whose status as a Jew kept him often out of work, and Maria M.
