Jan 9, 2024 · Tan Siew Sin died on 17 March 1988 in Kuala Lumpur, and was buried in the family burial ground in Malacca. His widow, Catherine Lim Cheng Neo, whom he married on February 8, 1947 was an active campaigner for family planning.

The father and son – Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Tun Tan Siew Sin – both went on to become MCA presidents. Cheng Lock founded MCA on Feb 27, 1949, while Siew Sin helmed the party from 1961 to 1974. Shortly after World War II, the then Malaya was in a turbulent era where hundreds of thousands of Chinese faced deportation by their colonial masters.

Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin is a street in the inner city of Kuala Lumpur. It was originally known during the British colonial times as Cross Street. In 2003 it was renamed in honour of Tun Tan Siew Sin, the first Minister of Commerce and Industry of Malaya, and then for the subsequent 15 years (1959-1974), the Finance Minister.
However, Tun Tan Siew Sin, the country's longest serving finance minister, is best remembered for great things, including laying a strong foundation for Malaysia's economy. Tan, who was MCA president from 1961 to 1974 and finance minister from 1959 to 1974, passed away on Mar 17, 1988.
