Joseph was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, a son of Jacob and his wife Rachel. Known as “the righteous one,” he was favored by his father (who gave him a special colored coat) and sold by his brothers to Egypt, where he ultimately became ruler of the land, second only to King Pharaoh.

He calmly interprets the Pharaoh’s dreams, predicting seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. He then has the courage to offer a solution. Pharaoh is duly impressed and quickly appoints him as second-in-command, thus making him the most politically powerful Jew in history.
