Matthew does not say that Joseph “begot” Jesus; instead, Matthew says, “Joseph (was) the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus” (Matthew 1:16). Joseph was not the human progenitor of Jesus. Luke’s account explains that by a miracle of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38).
