He felt that her celebrity might give her an unfair advantage over her opponent in the Congressional race. That's why he recorded an ad for the Republican. But Kulp almost certainly would have lost the election anyway. It was a conservative district and she lost by a wide margin.

Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett) contacted her Republican opponent and recorded a radio ad saying Nancy was too liberal and not to vote for her. She would likely have lost the election anyway, but lost 34% to 66%.
