May 22, 2021 · Maud was traumatized by accidentally killing a former patient and that lead to her having a breakdown in which she never recovered from and she now feels like she has to save Amanda's soul as retribution. At the very end we see Maud light herself on fire and ascend to heaven and then cut to her screaming in pain.
Saint Maud is a gem, imo. Very original take on a familiar narrative in religious history & literature. The stuff about ecstatic religious experience reminded me a bit of Breaking the Waves, but the story is completely different. Glad you enjoyed it!

May 19, 2021 · Repulsion is the film that seemingly kicked off this subgenre of psychological horror through the eyes of a damaged woman. It's also the best in the genre. A recent favorite (besides Saint Maude and the Black pants Daughter) is the Eyes of My Mother. Both of these are in gorgeous black&white. 6.

She is a disturbed and lost person who murdered a dying artist. She ruined the end of life moments for a person she was supposed to care for, to hold and bathe and feed and comfort.

It's a slow burn but definitely worth it. If you enjoyed "The Blackcoats Daughter" and "The Witch" you would most likely enjoy "Saint Maud".
