Born in 1978 in Heidelberg, Germany, of New Zealand and German descent. Having grown up in Germany, emigrated to New Zealand in 2000, after graduating Abitur majoring in fine art and English. Lived and studied in Wellington, New Zealand.
The New Me 2020. The NEW ME series was begun in 2008 and is ongoing. Every few years I spend a lunar month – 28 days – painting a self portrait in front of the mirror every day. The resulting paintings are hung in sequence, seven wide and four high, like a calendar.

The French Dispatch Paintings. In 2018 Wes Anderson asked me to create all the paintings that were painted by the character Moses Rosenthaler, who is played by Benicio Del Toro and Tony Revolori in the film THE FRENCH DISPATCH.

Rosenthaler Suite 1. This is a large painting that I made in early 2022 using the methods and materials I developed for the French Dispatch paintings. 280cm by 700cm , mixed media on panel. It was painted and first shown at Ebensperger Berlin and then exhibited again at Ebensperger Vitrine in Graz.
Jul 8, 2021 · Sandro Kopp’s Skype Portraits, which he showed in particular in the exhibition “There You Are” at the Gallery Lehmann Maupin in New York (2012), were examined by Carolin Ackermann in the text “Sandro Kopp – ANALOGUE“ on the occasion of the exhibition “Analogue” in the Gallery Antoine Laurentin in Paris (2014).
Eye Portraits. Eye portraits are painted only from life in many different locations. Most of these were painted from 2017 to 2019, but the series is ongoing. Sizes generally range from 10x10cm to 20x20cm.
