Xu Bing (Chinese: 徐冰; pinyin: Xú Bīng; born 1955) is a Chinese artist who served as vice-president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is known for his printmaking skills and installation art, as well as his creative artistic use of language, words, and text and how they have affected our understanding of the world.
Throughout his career, Xu Bing has grappled with the power of the written word. His iconic installation Book from the Sky (1987–91) surrounds the viewer with thousands of Chinese characters that, upon closer examination, are invented nonsense words.
Since 1980s, Mr. Xu Bing has always stood at the forefront of the avant-garde art scenes in China, thereby contributing to and boosting the international acclaim of contemporary Asian art. Mr. Xu Bing was born in Chongqing, Sichuan province, in 1955, and grew in up Beijing from 1957.
