Alexander Aronovich Knaifel (Russian: Алекса́ндр Аро́нович Кна́йфель; also Knayfel, Knayfel, or Kneifel; 28 November 1943 – 27 June 2024) was a Soviet composer from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, known for his operas The Ghost of Canterville and Alice in Wonderland as well as for his music for cinema.

Jun 28, 2024 · Composer Alexander Knaifel has died, aged 80. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 1943, Knaifel grew up in St Petersburg. Setting out, initially, to be a cellist, he studied with Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory in the early 1960s.
Alexander Knaifel was born in 1943 in Tashkent but grew up in St Petersburg. He studied with Rostropovich and his relationship with him remained close until the great cellist’s death. Rostropovich features on Amicta Sole, the second ECM release of Knaifel’s music.
Being “a resident of St. Petersburg” by his “ethnic origin”, the Honoured Art Worker of Russia, and the holder of the Order of Friendship, Alexander Knaifel was the first musician of Russia to win the DAAD international award (Germany, 1993).
