John Qualen was born to Norwegian immigrant parents and brought up in Vancouver and rural Illinois. He attended Northwestern University and began acting in tent shows and stock productions, to the dismay of his strict minister father.
John Qualen was a versatile character actor who appeared in many classic films by John Ford and other directors. He played various nationalities, often with ethnic accents, and was known for his roles in The Grapes of Wrath, His Girl Friday, Casablanca, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
