College Football Hall of Fame. John Frederick Dryer (born July 6, 1946) is an American actor, radio host, and former professional football player. He was a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) for 13 years, participating in 176 games starting in 1969 until his retirement in 1981.
Fred Dryer is best known for playing Hunter, a tough cop in a TV series that ran from 1984 to 1991. He also played football for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

In September, Fred began working as an NFL color commentator for CBS. Then in January of 1982, Fred began his full-time pursuit of an acting career, where in March of 1984, he was hired by Stephen J. Cannel to play the role of Sgt. Rick Hunter on the NBC hit-series, “Hunter”. The show aired for seven seasons and elevated Fred to worldwide fame.
