In 1853-54 he made a series of photographic studies of nude and costumed figures as models for artists. The French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix helped him pose the figures and later praised the results, from which he and other artists sketched.
The Female Nude Study continues the theme of a beautiful naked curved woman, using the hair to symbolize the natural flow of water. The sketches were used for the painting Goldfish (1901) by Klimt, which caries the same atheistic as Beethoven Frieze.
