A young boy watches his dog disappear through a portal into another dimension. After searching for him, the dog returns with strange symbols on his collar. The boy's father is an alcoholic, unemployed rocket scientist or something; his mother is a depressed, unemployed cosmologist and/or chemist who is hooked on sleeping medications.
