Vigil in the Night is a serial novella by A. J. Cronin, initially published in 1939 in Good Housekeeping. It tells the tale of two nurses: Anne Lee, who devotes herself to serving others, and her younger sister Lucy, who tries to get everything in life for herself.
Anne loses her job and gets a new one at a poorly-equipped country hospital, where she falls in love with Dr. Prescott, who is battling with Mr. Bowly, the chairman of the local hospital board, who also makes Anne's life miserable. But then a virulent epidemic begins.
