Plot. In 1942, during the Pacific War in Tokyo, 11-year-old Mahito Maki loses his mother Hisako in a hospital fire. One year later, Mahito’s father Shoichi, an air munitions factory owner, marries and impregnates his late wife's sister, Natsuko, and they evacuate to her rural estate.
Movie synopsis: 12-year-old Mahito struggles to settle in a new town after his mother`s death. However, when a talking heron informs Mahito that his mother is still alive, he enters an abandoned tower in search of her, which takes him to an alternate world filled with magic.

The Boy and the Heron is a Japanese animated movie directed and written by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. The film is inspired by the novel of the same name written by Genzaburo Yoshino, though it is not a direct adaptation.
