Maxwell Davenport Taylor (born August 26, 1901, Keytesville, Missouri, U.S.—died April 19, 1987, Washington, D.C.) was a U.S. Army officer who became a pioneer in airborne warfare in Europe during World War II and who later served as U.S. ambassador to South Vietnam during the early years of the Vietnam War.
In March 1944 Taylor assumed command of the 101st Airborne Division. He was promoted to major general in June. Taylor parachuted with the division into Normandy on D-Day and commanded it during the airborne invasion of Holland and in the Ardennes and Central European campaigns.
