Following Sultan Hashim's death on 10 May 1906, [39] Pengiran Muda Bongsu Muhammad Jamalul Alam II, [39] the 17-year-old son, assumed the role of Sultan of Brunei. The young Sultan's age meant that Pengiran Bendahara and Pengiran Pemancha, who were older, took on regent duties.
